High-performance hardware and software is essential for the recording, processing, archiving, and presentation of large volumes of data. Geoscientific interpretation requires complex mathematical modelling - which is very time-consuming even with the level of computing power that is available today. Visualization and 3-D modelling methods are also part of the work of the section. The data and modelling results are stored in databases.
The software includes relational database systems, various commercial and in house modelling and visualisation programs, as well as geoinformation systems. The rapid development in the IT sector requires continuous adaptation in order to take advantage of the new possibilities.
