The institute has a governing board, called Kuratorium. In matters of scientific relevance the institute obtains advice from a scientific advisory board. For arrangements on current or take-up of new research issues the institute has an internal research committee.

Members of the institute provide important input to the infrastructure of the geoscience community. They act as reviewers and editors of scientific journals, and they are involved in committee work of science organisations and in the management of research programmes.
