GGA Institute conducts research in the field of physical geosciences to meet future needs of the society. The institute's mission, its responsibility, its achievements, and its challenge are summarized in a mission statement. The institute investigates the upper part of the Earth's crust which is accessible for economic use, of primary importance for the supply of essential resources, and vulnerable against man made impacts. Most of the institute's activities are conducted in Germany.
According to its know-how and stock in instruments and measurement systems, GGA Institute is grouped into five sections representing different types of methods. Some 70 staff members participate in four topical research fields and in the development and improvement of techniques.
The institute receives its basic financial support from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technologie, Berlin, and from the Ministry of Economics, Labour, and Transport of the State Lower Saxony Hannover, as well as from contributions of the other German States.
