Chronology and Paleoclimatology of Middle and Upper Pleistocene Terrestrial
Deposits between East European Plain and Siberia
The main objectives of the present project are:
- to establish a reliable absolute chronology of the Middle and Upper
Pleistocene interglacials between East-European Plain and Siberia by dating
of organic-rich interglacial matter like peat and gyttja by radiometric and
TIMS 230 Th/U method and the overlying and underlying sands and/or aleurites
by luminescence dating methods.
- to determine a rank and the duration of Snaigupele Interglacial in
Lithuania and the Kargino Interglacial in Siberia.
- to reconstruct the vegetation and the palaeoclimatic history of the
Middle and Upper Pleistocene interglacial periods on the Russian Plain, in
Western Siberia, Belarus and Lithuania based on palaeontological, stratigraphical
and geochronological investi-gations from the reference sections.
- to correlate Middle and Upper Pleistocene interglacials and interstadials
between the East-European Plain and Siberia to reconstruct spatial and temporal
changes of vegetation and palaeoclimate and to correlate these findings with
the marine record.
